“SPRING THINGS” 1

I’ve been feeling very “springy” as of late.

Abundant sunshine and peeks at warm weather have brought about a wonderful hopefulness.

It has also brought about the realization that I have cultivated many things over this fine winter….

What I think I’m craving, (actually, what I know I need) is a good, old-fashioned….

SPRING CLEANING for the soul + mind + body!!

Before I moved to cityscapes, people would rake their lawns to let the new grass breathe in the Spring.

(I kept that image in mind as a guide for this article.)

This week: I’m giving you steps to spring clean + allow your surroundings to take new roots...

Step 1: Clear the unnecessary OLD

I like having a little playful clutter to warm up a space as much as anyone else. I air on the side of favoring eclectic, vintage design so I believe that, in moderation, it can make your space feel cozy. Oftentimes though, things just pile up.

Clear first, the clutter out in the open that is making life feel tired.

  • Sort through papers, bills, notes, mail and recycle or toss

  • Throw out old food food in your fridge, freezer, and cabinets

  • Organize those unfinished “projects” laying on your counter into a designated area + make a concrete, time centric plan to finish them (Set a due date)

Step 2: Unravel the BEASTS inside your house

When I’m feeling particularly lazy, I like to put things in drawers, cabinets, shelves, under the bed (Anyone else?)

This leads me to the next fun part…DESTRUCTION!

AKA: taking out and sorting through the items you keep in other objects + spaces, to really see what’s been hiding in the dust of changing seasons.

This often leads to tossing or repurposing lost items…

  • Sort while you destroy

  • Make piles: KEEP, MAYBE, TRASH, REORGANIZE, DONATE

Step 4: RE-EVALUATE your living space

Move your bed against the other wall… re-distribute objects or find new places for old things…question all of your methods of decor efficiency??

Re-organizing how objects are kept can a shed a new light on your space and transform the way you feel about your home.

Tidiness brings about lovely simplicity. With simplicity, we are able to function better and worry less. Along the same lines, remaining in an unchanging orientation all the time can be comforting, but it is very possible that this orientation has little function.

  • In this time frame, put away the objects you pulled out

  • separate them with thought, care, and purpose

Step 4: Actually CLEAN

Can’t skip this one…

This includes not only your surroundings, but the things that “do life” with you.

  • Jackets, coats, sweatshirts

  • Blankets and comforters

  • Backpacks, purses + wallets

  • Phone, iPad, Laptop

  • Keys

  • Water-bottes + coffee mugs

Step 5: Explore NEW possibilities!

Does your space make you happy?

Maybe this reorganization of space has brought forth a need for something new like a shelf, mirror, plant, painting, chair, or small table.

Highlight objects that actively cultivate happiness. Leave the others out, because…

..AT the end of the day, It is even more important to establish a happy environment than a clean environment.

More on this next week!
